IN MEMORIAM
Joseph Bruno Slowinski
1962 – 2001
It
is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Joe Slowinski,
Associate Curator of Herpetology at the Academy. Joe died on September
12th after suffering a bite from a highly venomous snake while on his 11th
expedition in his beloved Myanmar.
In
a California Wild magazine article last year, Joe wrote “For a
herpetologist, finding a new species is always exciting; for me, finding a
new cobra species is the ultimate discovery.” Since Joe began his
comprehensive survey of the herpetofauna of Myanmar in 1997, he has
discovered approximately 18 new species of amphibians and reptiles.
Few
scientists are more passionate about or devoted to their work than Joe
was. He told wonderful tales and with equal ease could thrill an audience
of fourth graders or his scientific peers. The dangers Joe faced never
diminished his spirit and enthusiasm for his research on the world’s
most venomous snakes and he was never more happy than when he was working
in lands still largely unexplored by scientists.
Dr.
Joseph B. Slowinski was one of a kind. He will be missed by all who knew
him.
